Douce Amie (sweet friend) is a piece in the romantic style. For the first four phrases the left hand has the tune, accompanied by gentle crotchets in the right hand. The hands then swap roles so that the right hand has the tune, and later they swap back again so that the left hand has the final word. The accompaniment texture gets thicker from the middle of the piece, where some interesting and rich harmonies support the melody.
